DAN THOMASSON: Simpson should leave Social Security panel
In the world of cutesy, sound bite politics danger lurks around every corner, especially for those who built their reputations on quick quips or snappy comebacks. More than one career has been sunk by loose lips, particularly in a day when things that used to be funny aren’t any more.

President Barack Obama will give a 15-minute televised address tonight to mark the formal conclusion of U.S. combat operations in Iraq. Chinese farmers fighting wild boar damage
Farmers in China’s Zhejiang province are suffering loss of crops and even injury as the area’s wild boar population soars.
The number of wild boars in the eastern province has increased more than 5-fold in the last 10 years, from around 27,000 to an estimated 150,000.
A number of factors are being blamed for the rise in wild boar numbers, includin the effects of Chairman Mao’s attempts during his tenure to conquer nature. This has led to an imbalance of predators to prey in agricultural areas, such as tigers and wild boar in Zhejiang province.
The province has also seen a large migration of its population from the countryside to the cities as people seek work, leaving behind fewer farmers and more untended areas of land. This unused land provides wild boars with a habitat.
A 6-month restriction on guns while the 2010 World Expo takes place in Shanghai has meant a stop to the hunting of wild boars, normally allowed 8 months of the year.
Snakes, an animal eaten by wild boars, have reduced in numbers in the province as their predators multiply. This in turn has led to an increase in the number of mice and rats, the prey of snakes. The rodents are a destructive enemy of the farmers as they feed on grains.
In the face of some farms reporting a loss of a third of their crops, and several reported injuries by wild boars, farmers have been turning to traps and electric fences to try and halt the invasion.

Football entertaining, but not appealing to all
Football entertaining, but not appealing to all
As a student I’d like to think I do well enough – I strive for good grades, I’m involved around campus and I’m well behaved (or at least pretend to be). But in one area I disappoint everyone around me: sports knowledge. I’ll fail every Trivial Pursuit question about football and soccer, and until last year, I didn’t understand what March Madness was.
